OCTOBER newsletter
President's Report Some of our club members recently took time from their weekend and attended the District I and II meeting in Pleasant Hill on Oct 18th. Our club had excellent representation (9 members!) and I was so proud to be a member of SISRV. Thank you to April, Joan, Sally, Holly, Jenny, Arlene, Patty G. and Marlene for attending with me and thanks to April for donating proceeds from her Nature Photography sales that day to the club. And, finally, thanks to Joan and Sally for helping to "man" the sales of our See's candy and Flower Pens (made by the S Club). We won several awards during the day: 1) "In recognition of the recruitment of four or more new members during the 2007-2008 club year" we were recognized as meeting the Renaissance Membership Challenge; 2) Certificate of Participation in the 2008 Women's Opportunity Awards and 3) Bronze level status for our contribution to the Annual Club Campaign. Part of the District Meeting is to raise money for Fellowship. Thanks to Julie Collins for making the lovely basket for the raffle that day! The other good news is that, although we did not win a raffle basket, we DID win a Fellow. So, we will be deciding how we want to give this Fellow to 1 of the members of our club. The format for the day was designed to be interactive. We were split up and sat with women from other clubs which helped to encourage this interaction. We had a few workshops and exchanged ideas and information our about clubs. We heard more about Project Sierra and had a report from Convention from Governor Amelia. We also learned that there will be a 1 day S Club Conference to coincide with our conference the weekend of May 1-2-3. On Fri, May 1 there will be an S Club Conference. I am sure we will hear more details about this as the date gets closer. On Fri, I delivered the refreshments that SISRV and the S Club donated to Anna's Program's Pink Ribbon Days. They were held at 2 locations: the Thrift Shop in Concord and the Thrift Shop in Danville. They were VERY appreciative of our support. We recently gave out our first Innovation Award. For Q3, the winner was Kelly Vail. Almost as soon as she joined the club just a short time ago, she has had some very creative ideas on how to improve and help the club. Last year she held a very successful e-waste recyclying fundraiser for the S Club. She developed the idea of a viral video that we can post on our website advertising SAT (and, in general, SISRV). And, she came up with the idea of the totebags that we will be distributing to the girls at SAT. Many thanks to Kelly for her continued contributions to the club! Finally, I wanted to thank Patty G. and her husband, Sam, for allowing us to hold our Fall Garage Sale at their house this past Sat. I know this is a big hassle and an inconvenience so I wanted to personally thank them for doing this for the club. I look forward to seeing you all at the Potluck at my house this Wed. Submitted by: Eileen Sheridan "SHE's ALL THAT" Report She's All That! 2009 is growing rapidly and coming together well. For our fifth annual event, held at Gale Ranch Middle School, we are taking a new approach to a keynote speaker by assembling a diverse panel of career women. We have enhanced our course offering for the girls with a hand full of new course, see list below. For the adults we have expanded the selection of course and lengthened the sessions to 90 minutes. Our sponsor backing is strong and solid this year even with the market changes; we'll see the final list in February. We have had renewed excitement by non-member volunteers joining in. The club is also living the vision of best for women by supporting the Thailand chapters' signature award-winning project for economic development, "Cross-stitching with Love." Our gift bags will be hand-crafts which give back to women and to Soroptimists, internationally. As the 2009 Committee Chairman, I am very proud of the support and continued dedication of the contributing members. We have met many milestones already and continue to support each other on the common passion. Our next meeting is Monday, October 27th at the San Ramon Chamber of Commerce Conference Room at 5:30pm, all are welcome to join in. Girls workshops are:

Submitted by: Kelly Vail, SAT Committee Chairperson Report from Ways and Means HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE: NOVEMBER 20th! Shop for the holidays while donating to charity! MonaVie Premier Acai Blend The Holiday Boutique is one of the many ways that we raise money for our chosen charities. With each item you buy, the vendors are donating back a portion of their proceeds to the Soroptimists of San Ramon Valley. So, please come and help us with our mission, to help the lives of women and girls all around the world! Where & When See's Candy: See Julie Y. if you would like to participate in the See's Candy Holiday Fundraiser! She has all of the info. Deadline for orders is November 21st! Publicity Update Publicity this past month has generally been in the form of members attending various Chamber of Commerce activities. Thanks to those who represented our club at these events. Now that our She’s All That! Conference flyer is nearly complete, we’ll be sending it out to the various school districts in the area for approval. Once approval is in hand, we’ll be printing copies of the flyer and delivering them out to the various middle schools. The Publicity Committee is going to need a lot of help getting the She’s All That! flyers out to the numerous schools throughout San Ramon Valley, Castro Valley, Dublin, Pleasanton, Livermore and Fremont as well as libraries, community centers, etc. throughout the area. Please let April know if you’re able to participate in this important activity and whether you’re willing to present information about the conference at upcoming City Council meetings and other public and school events. Additional promotional efforts for the conference will include Public Service Announcements with local radio and television stations, e-blasts to parents via the PTA and schools, calendar postings on pertinent community websites and press releases to our local newpapers. We’ll be using our registration program to e-blast previous attendees with registration information and will also count on our club membership to spread the news to your circle of co-workers, neighbors, friends and family members. So, get ready for a lot of promotional efforts for our She’s All That! Conference beginning in November! Submitted by: April Rovero Paradise Adolescent Homes Activities The PAH committee is working hard to ensure we have at least one activity with the Paradise girls each month. In September we had what turned out to be one of our most successful activities with the girls. Eight of the girls piled into Sally and April’s cars and headed up to Mount Diablo, which all of the girls had certainly seen from a distance but had never been to the top of. We made a stop on the way up the mountain so the girls could get a view of the San Ramon Valley and they were very impressed. Our next stop was at Rock City, where the girls got out to check out the view and restroom facilities. Most weren’t impressed with the rudimentary facility and wouldn’t do more than open the door! While at Rock City, I gave a short “Leave No Trace” presentation, using REI’s materials that I use when presenting to other youth groups while I’m working there. I emphasized the need for them to pick up their trash wherever they are and they learned how long it can take for certain items to bio-degrade. We continued up to the top of the mountain where the girls were treated to a 360o view of both sides of the mountain. It was a really warm day, so we decided to head back down the mountain to find a picnic spot that was shady. We found a nice spot not far from the summit and hauled all of our picnic goodies to the table. All was going really well when Victoria Felix, one of the administrators from Dougherty Valley High who joined us that day, let out a scream. It turned out that a small dead snake was lying right by our table! The girl’s reaction ranged from fascination to horror, but we all got over it pretty quickly and continued on with our great picnic lunch. After lunch, we headed back down to Rock City, where most of us took a short hike along a trail with great boulders, rock caves and interesting views. We took pictures of the girls having a lot of fun posing on the rocks. Given the heat, we were only out on the trail for 20 minutes or so, and we headed back to the parking area where we joined Victoria and two of the non-hiking girls. All of the girls seemed to really enjoy the outing and some of them asked if we could go back up there to camp sometime. I told them that was a possibility. Thanks so much to those who donated food for our picnic. The girls really enjoyed it and so did Sally, Victoria and I! Our next activity with the girls will be on 10/29 at the Bollinger Hills Cabana where Mary Church, Dougherty Valley High School career and college counselor will be talking with the girls about opportunities available to them. The details of this program are currently being worked on and will be shared with you as soon as we have everything developed. Our program in November will be to do a field trip to Santa Cruz where we’ll check out the migrating butterflies, do a campus tour of UC Santa Cruz and have a picnic lunch. We should have a specific date for this activity by the end of this week. I’ve firmed up our plans to have the holiday party for the girls on 12/6, which will follow their enjoyment of the play “A Christmas Carol” at our local theatre. Some details have already been provided and more will follow! Submitted by: April Rovero, PAH Committee Co-Chair S Club Update We are off to a strong start! We have at least 30 active girls and the leadership is VERY strong this year. The club has already made pink ribbons for Anna's Program's Pink Ribbon Days (held on Fri, 10/24) and made Flower Pens to be used as a fundraiser (and, potentially to donate to senior centers, etc). In addition, one club member, President Bridget, helped out at Tri Valley Haven's Family Fair and 8 girls volunteered on 10/24 at Danville's Fall Fest. They will be trick-or-treating for Unicef again this year and look forward to doing something for Thanksgiving whether it is making a meal and/or pies again or donating food FOR a meal. Finally, the girls designed their own S Club T shirt and found a way to keep the price under $10! They are not only creative but business savvy as well! Submitted by: Eileen and Joan WOA and VR Award Applications We need everyone's help to distribute the WOA and VR award applications. Now that there are electronic versions available, this should be easier than ever before! These are due back in to us by 12/1 so please help us to get some good candidates! If you need applications, please contact Sally. Submitted by: Sally and Eileen April’s Fundraising Opportunity I’m currently taking orders for holiday cards and framed and matted photographs made from my photographic adventures over the past few years. I have five different boxed sets of six cards, each made from different winter scenes. These sets sell for $15 each, or $2.75 for individual cards. The cards I have on hand are blank inside, but I can custom design them to have a greeting printed inside if you’d prefer a pre-printed message. I’ve also got six different boxed sets of six cards from 36 different pictures of bears I’ve photographed in Sequoia NP and Alaska over the past couple of years that would make great gifts for bear enthusiasts. These are also priced at $15 each or $2.75 for individual cards. All of the pictures that appear on these cards can be enlarged to anything up to 24x36”, and can be provided either in a matted only or framed format. I also have dozens of other nature and outdoor photographs that are pre-matted and immediately available for gifts or you can shop on my website for additional images. You can visit my website at www.sharingnaturephotography.com to see what’s available. To check out my Winter Collection and Bear Collection cards, please click on those specific galleries, which appear first on my gallery page and then let me know what you’d like to order. I’ll be donating 15% of my net proceeds to our club for everything I sell to club members and from the various boutiques and other events I’m participating in throughout the end of the year. So, please consider shopping with me if you need gifts, stocking stuffers and cards for the holidays! Chi's Benefit Gala On Sat, 11/1, Chi Nguyen (past Violet Richardson Award winner) will be holding a Benefit Gala from 6:00-10:00 at the SR Community Center. It will feature "accessible Vietnamese" cuisine, dancing to live music, silent auction, video presentation and photo exhibit. All proceeds go to helping the Vietnamese street children (this Gala is taking the place of the annual piano recitals that she and her sister have held in the past). Please contact me if you would like tickets. Submitted by: Eileen Sheridan HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO: Arlene on 10/27! |
